India Business Studies

Each year, the staff of IndiaInternships.com prepare and deliver a curriculum designed to provide participants with a thorough overview of the business and management climate of India as it relates to the U.S. and other developed countries, as well as to illustrate current critical concepts of global business management.  Based in Bangalore, the program provides an invaluable opportunity for observing and experiencing an enormous concentration of the world's most respected companies in the fields of IT, healthcare, biotech, management and strategic consulting, customer and tech support, accounting, international investment and more.
Courses are designed to complement the internship experience, which provides participants with knowledge and skills developed through the course of working in a cross-cultural environment.  Lectures and site visits introduce and explore the concepts and set the context, while group projects cement the skills through demonstration and peer coaching.

Semester Format
Students will attend class on Fridays.  Each of the six courses will be taught using a course-at-a-time format with each course comprised of approximately 8 classroom hours, the equivalent of .5 credit hour per class.

Fortune 500 Executive Presentations
In addition, IndiaInternships.com will host executives from the myriad of Fortune 500 and related companies in Bangalore, who will present to the lecture classes, followed by a session of Q & A and networking.  More informal social and networking events will also be arranged with members of the American Chamber of Commerce , the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce , and Nasscom (National Association of Software and Services Companies), the premier trade body and chamber of commerce of the IT software and services industry in India.

Faculty
All courses are taught by some of India's most qualified professors and business professionals , with expertise in the subject area of the course assigned to them.   In addition, IndiaInternships.com will host executives and professors from U.S. corporations and business schools as visiting faculty.

The Curriculum
The following are the IndiaInternships.com courses for Fall 2005 and Winter/Spring 2006 and Summer 2006*

1.  Managing Business and People in India
This introductory course will provide a background and analysis of the business and management environments in India, particularly relative to the regions of Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, and New Delhi.  Understanding the history and contemporary practices of India will help participants gain an insight into the complexities of doing business to and from this global, economic powerhouse of the 21st century.

2.  India Finance and Economics
Global and Indian financial markets and economic forces will be studied, with emphasis in the following areas:

  • Accounting standards
  • Taxation
  • Currency rates and risk management
  • Interest and inflation rates and risk management
  • Global and Indian exchange markets
  • Access to equity and debt markets
  • Financial risk assessment
  • International trade
  • Tariffs
  • Balance of trade and payments issues
  • Strengths and challenges of India's rising economy

3.  Marketing in India
Whether you are marketing goods or services from abroad to India, from India to abroad, or from within India to India will dictate the structure, management and strategies of the marketing employed.  Topics in this course will include analysis of the Indian consumer with emphasis on the ever-growing middle and upper class; U.S. and Indian governmental promotions and policies; the impact of investment and trade on marketing; global marketing channels.

4.  Managing the BPO Organization
In terms of sheer worker volume, no industry has had a greater impact on the labor market in India and the U.S. than the offshoring of business process outsourcing.  Students will learn how this phenomenon developed and was perfected in India, and will then focus on the management issues and challenges that are inherent in the BPO process, including:

  • Value added propositions vs. cost control
  • Productivity and efficiency
  • IT management tools
  • Employee satisfaction and retention
  • Cross cultural challenges
  • Customer interaction strategies
  • Team/Co-worker/Supervisor/Manager issues
  • Internal/external, India/U.S. training
  • U.S.-to-India job/worker transition issues

5.  Managing the Knowledge (IT, biotech, pharma, analytics, consultancy) Organization
While the BPO organization initially received most of the attention in offshoring, it is the knowledge organization that is causing the most upheaval and creating the most discussion when it comes to moving jobs from the U.S., as the growth prospect, at least in breadth, is greatest in this area.  In addition to the areas explored in the BPO Organization course, the Knowledge Organization course will also focus on:

  • What is a knowledge organization?
  • Who is the knowledge worker?
  • Organization strategies and models
  • Key differences in management styles/issues in U.S. vs. India
  • Key differences in management styles/issues in BPO vs. knowledge organization

6.  Case Study
Utilizing knowledge and skills learned throughout the semester, students will conclude with a case study of a BPO and/or knowledge organization.  Challenges, successes and failures of various elements of the implementation and operation will be discussed and analyzed
